Hadith - Al-Muwatta 28.56
Yahya related to me from Malik from Yahya ibn
Said that Said ibn al-Musayyab said, "There are three things in which there
is no jest: marriage, divorce, and setting free."
Hadith - Tirmidhi, Narrated As-Sa'ib ibn Yazid on his father's authority
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "None of you must take his brother's staff jestingly with the intention of causing annoyance. Anyone who takes his brother's staff must return it to him."
Tirmidhi and AbuDawud transmitted it, the latter's version ending at "causing annoyance."
Joking and Private Affection between Spouses is Encouraged
Hadith - Al-Muwatta 18.16
Yahya related to me from Malik from Abu'n-Nadr, the mawla of Umar ibn Ubaydullah that A'isha bint Talha told him that she was once with A'isha, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and her husband, who was fasting, came and visited her there. (He was Abdullah ibn Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abi Bakras-Siddiq.) A'isha said to him, "What's stopping you from coming close to your wife and kissing her and joking with her?" He said, "Can I kiss her when I am fasting?" She said, "Yes."
Jokes should not contain falsehood
The Noble Qur'an 33:70
O you who believe! Keep your duty to Allâh and fear Him, and speak (always) the truth.
Hadith - Al-Tirmidhi 4885, Narrated Abu Hurayrah
When they said, "Messenger of Allah, do you make jokes with us!" he replied, "I say nothing but the truth." [Tirmidhi transmitted it.]
Hadith - Abu Dawud 4782, Narrated Abu Umamah
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: I guarantee a house in the surroundings of Paradise for a man who avoids quarrelling even if he were in the right, a house in the middle of Paradise for a man who avoids lying even if he were joking, and a house in the upper part of Paradise for a man who made his character good. [Saheeh: Abu Daawood and al-Bayhaqee, authenticated by al-Albaanee in as-Saheehah]
